Treatment and Technology

Radiation therapy — what to expect
Radiation therapy is a painless procedure that has been used safely and effectively to treat cancer and other diseases for more than 50 years.

Radiation treatments are delivered with a linear accelerator — a very sophisticated machine. This technology uses an invisible beam of energy to penetrate the tumor and destroy the cancer cells. The beam is guided and shaped by metal "blocks" that protect the surrounding tissue.

Before treatment begins, the patient participates in a simulation process that mimics the actual treatment. Careful measurements and calculations are made to determine precisely where the tumor is and the best way to treat it.

Using the best equipment available, we are proud to offer the latest in modern technology at the Cancer Center Sedona Campus. CT conformal therapy, three dimensional treatment planning, digital reconstructive radiographs and other high-tech methods are used to make the treatment as effective as possible. In 2005, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) was added to the Cancer Center Sedona Campus. IMRT is one of the most precise forms of radiation therapy available. IMRT allows the oncologist to better target and increase radiation doses, while minimizing side effects. This treatment capability has shown results in improved patient outcomes, less chance for reoccurrence and increased survival rates. IMRT has been called the most significant breakthrough in radiation treatments in the past 30 years, and is used to treat difficult tumors in the spine, head, neck, prostate, liver and brain.

Nursing case management
Radiation oncology nursing staff provides case management services for patients and their families. Services include assessment, monitoring and appropriate medical intervention for actual and potential problems related to the disease process and treatment.
